The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) was established in 1946. The council is the place where issues about economic, social and environmental challenges are discussed and debated. ECOSOC has the responsibility for about 70% of the human and financial resources of the entire UN system.  Its 54 members are selected for a period of three years by the General Assembly.

ECOSOC´S main function is to focus on the UN’s Millennium Development Goals which are:

  1. Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger

  2. Achieve universal primary education

  3. Promote gender equality and empower women

  4. Reduce child mortality

  5. Improve maternal health

  6. Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases

  7. Ensure environmental sustainability

  8. Develop a global partnership for development

The MDGs represent an important vision for sustainable development. They can serve as a base for the efforts of the science and engineering communities, recognizing, that science and technology contribute to some of these goals more than others and they represent the beginning for the developments that needs to be achieved.
